The Secondary Program

The Secondary Program caters for adolescents and young adults. Here the students are placed in Senior or Exit classes.

Purpose

The Secondary program extends academic, physical and social competences and focuses on the development of independent living and vocational skills.

The program incorporates community and school based activities that also encourage the development of personal independence.

During the critical and sensitive developmental stage, supportive teaching and individual attention assists students to develop their confidence, self-esteem and social skills.

Curriculum

Individual Education Programs and learning goals are established for each student annually. These realistic goals are set to take account of the skills necessary to access options for a purposeful post school placement.

In addition to the core survival reading and mathematics curriculum, a wide range of programs are provided.

A travel training program suited to individual needs fosters independence by teaching students how to use public transport. The students are provided with opportunities to learn how to read timetables, develop safety awareness and understand local public transport routes.

A consumer education program focuses on the need for each student to acquire a functional awareness of money and the skills necessary for shopping, banking and budgeting.

Physical skills are developed through participation in an extensive physical education program which highlights general physical well-being and includes swimming, gymnastics and bike education.

An important feature of the community involvement curriculum is the work experience program. Under the guidance of school staff, students access the many community employment contacts which have been established by the school.

A combination of supportive and flexible teaching approaches ensures that the educational needs and learning styles of all students are accommodated.
